TAPIR LODGE

Tapir Lodge is based in the northeastern Province of Sucumbíos, in the upper Ecuadorian Amazon region and was built in partnership with family members of the Siona Community. In order to meet appropriate ecological standards, Tapir Lodge shares with them the Eco-tourism activities and profits, while offering the best facilities in the heart of the jungle.
All rooms of the Lodge are equipped with private bathroom, hot water shower and mosquito nets per bed. In the social areas you will find hammocks for resting and a variety of books for reading.
Located in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Tapir Lodge is surrounded by one of the most biodiverse zones in the Ecuadorian Amazon Jungle. Here you can discover the pristine unique flora and fauna of the pristine rainforest and with a bit of luck you can spot some Amazon Dolphins.

EXAMPLE FOR AN ITINERARY 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS

Day 1

In the morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Lago Agrio, the centre of the oil industry in Ecuador. From there you will be driven by private transportation to the bridge (“El Puente”), which is the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve. On the way you will have the chance to see a colourful landscape combining rainforest, rivers and small towns. After enjoying your box lunch, you will continue your trip by canoe. The narrow river allows you to admire the wide variety of the local flora and fauna. After app. 2 ½ hours of driving, you will arrive at the Lodge at around 06:00 pm. Dinner and accommodation at Tapir Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 2

Depending on the weather conditions, you can go on an early excursion by canoe to look for birds and other animals. Return to the Lodge and breakfast. By canoe you will then drive upstream to the “Laguna Grande” (Main lake) enjoying a slow drive in order to catch sight of animals and plants. At the “Laguna Grande” you will discover the flooded forest also known as Igapo. The trees are growing straight in the water, and many of them are ancient, offering a perfect habitat for other plants, like bromeliads, orchids, ferns and cactuses. Afterwards you will hike along the “Palma Roja” (Red Palm) Path (approx. 3 ½ hours), which used to be part of the scientific station of the Catholic University. The path leads you into the primary forest, where you can observe woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, and toucans or some monkeys. Return to the lodge for Lunch. Time to rest and relax or try your luck by fishing some piranhas. In the late afternoon you will return to the “Laguna Grande” where you will enjoy the sunset and search with your flashlights for the animals on the shores of the river. Dinner and accommodation at Tapir Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 3

After an early breakfast you will take the canoe and drive downstream. You will enjoy a 2 hour-navigation looking at giant blue butterflies, toucans, macaws and with some luck monkeys. You will visit a small settlement, where you will get to know the shaman, Alberto and his family of the Cofán community. Alberto will introduce you to medicinal plants and rituals used by shamans to cure. Furthermore, you will also walk into the rainforest, which is the habitat of the tiny Ecuador poison frog. Lunch box. On your way back to the lodge you will visit a Siona-Family. Here you will learn more about the preparation of Cassava (Yuca) bread. Dinner and accommodation at Tapir Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 4

Today you will have the chance to choose the activities you like in agreement with your guide. You can choose between several options like birdwatching, rowing in the lake, fishing, or walking in the forest. Lunch will be served in the Lodge. Leisure time during the afternoon. Dinner and introduction to the crew members who did work during those days. Good-bye passion fruit cocktail. Accommodation at Tapir Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 5

After your breakfast you will head back to Lago Agrio, where you will take your flight back to Quito.
