With 55.000ha the Machalilla National Park invites you to watch interesting bird species and to hike through the tropical rainforest. 24km in front of the coast the Isla de la Plata is situated, about 36km north west of Puerto López, which had been the former hiding place of, among others, the famous privateer Sir Francis Drake. The variety of birds, such as frigates, masked boobies, blue-footed and red-footed boobies, and the occasional visits of a sea lion family have given the island the name of 'Little Galápagos'. From June to September you can observe the courtship among humpback whales. Relax on one of the marvellous beaches, such as for instance Los Frailes, a 5km long white sandy beach.
