The colonial old town of Quito (Die koloniale Altstadt von Quito)
dpa-Meldung, WEB.DE; Reise&Urlaub April, 19th 2005
 |
The dpa notice from April, 19th
2005, broaches the issue of the old town of Quito.
Ecuador - most of the people have the Galápagos islands
in mind or the jungle, but also the capital Quito has a lot
of attractions for tourists. In 1978, the old town was declared
World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. This quarter is characterised
by small and rampant alleys, churches, a monastery and lively
places. The Spanish conquerors built many churches, indoors
with gold and mirrors, because these materials were unknown
to the original inhabitants. Quito is a city with many contrasts:
believers in the churches and uniformed men outside who save
the buildings and people. |

Georg Alexander:
The whole of South America in one small country (Ganz Südamerika
in einem kleinen Land)
Süddeutsche Zeitung, Reisezeit, January, 8th 2005

 |
Where are the most beautiful places
in Ecuador? Can they be found in the Ecuadorian highlands with
spectacular volcanoes and colourful indio markets? Or in old
colonial towns imbedded between high mountains? Tropical beaches
near the pacific? In the cloudy forests with thousands of humming
birds, plants, orchids and animals? Or are they on the Galápagos
islands, 620 miles away from the mainland? Or perhaps in the
jungle? Ecuador is so diversified that many beauties of nature
and different cultures can be found there. All these things
characterise this small country. It can be said that Ecuador
unifies all aspects of South America in only one country. |

Georg Alexander:
Eco tourists instead of oil worker (Ökotouristen statt Ölarbeiter)
Bonner Generalanzeiger, 31.12.2004
Spiegel-Online, January, 04th at 10:19

Deep in the Ecuadorian jungle,
half a day away from any civilisation (by plane!), the Kapawi
Ecolodge is situated. Around the Lodge, about 4500 members
of the Achuar community live. The Lodge was built for eco
tourists by a company in Guayaquil but until the year 2011,
the Achuars will organise the establishment by themselves.
The author Georg Alexander writes about life in the Amazon
area, life of the Achuars but especially about the danger
and threat for the Achuar community by foreign oil companies.
These firms are interested in parts of the jungle because
of the enormous oil resources. The Achuar and some organisations
for environmental protection are fighting against the external
invasion. They want to beware and protect their environment,
the nature and the jungle with the huge biodiversity but also
the community of Achuar, which have been existingt many, many
years.
